MLO 3:
Literary and Cultural Knowledge
Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products - both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) - of Hispanic societies.
Personal Definition:
Students gain a strong comprehension of the mental models (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, and philosophies), behavioral patterns (patterns of social interactions), and cultural outputs (such as art, history, literature, and music) of Hispanic civilizations.
Reflective Narrative:
As part of the fulfillment of MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge, students gain a strong comprehension of the mental models (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, and philosophies), behavioral patterns (patterns of social interactions), and cultural outputs (such as art, history, literature, and music) of Hispanic civilizations. The courses that I have taken that fulfill MLO 3 are Span 310 Hispanic Children’s Literature, and Span 306 Culture/Civilization of Spanish Latin America. A particularly memorable assignment that I completed in Span 310 was my final presentation on the young adult novel The Secret Side of Empty by Maria E. Andreu. I appreciated the opportunity to select my own book for my final project analysis, and I was given the chance to read a book that called my attention. In the book, I learned about the impact of carrying a secret like immigration status. This class taught me about children’s literature that I wish I would have read when I was in elementary/middle school. Through reading this book for my final project, I learned how young adult books differ from adult books by keeping graphic violence and romance to an appropriate level. In my Span 306 class, I was able to work on a group project on the country of Venezuela. In this class, I was able to learn about the history of the country, important dates, the geographic location, the primary resources, the Venezuelan population, where each ethnic group resides, and the modern cities of Venezuela. It was interesting to learn about a country where a socialist party operates, contrary to the two-party system in the United States. This class opened up my understanding of the different countries in Latin America. Some challenges that remain as I continue to develop in this MLO are continuing to expand my knowledge of different Hispanic cultures. I believe that I have learned a lot from these classes and look forward to learning more as I progress through my academic and professional career.
