SPAN 304 - Intro To Hispanic Literature
Course Description: This course introduces the principles of literary analysis, based on reading and discussion of Hispanic literary texts. Includes fiction, drama, essay, and poetry from Spain and Spanish America. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative: I particularly remember struggling with poetry in high school, and revisiting poetry was something intimidating. In this course, I was able to polish a skill that I did not feel confident in. Because I took AP Spanish Literature in high school, some of the readings were a refresher of what I had covered in the past. In SPAN 304, I learned about multiple types of poetry and how to analyze poetry. Through the analysis of poetry, it became easier to notice figurative language, as well as to understand what these poems written centuries ago meant. Not only did we analyze poetry, but we also learned about the famous authors behind the literary pieces we read. In addition, for the final essay for this class, I decided to focus on poetry because I had become more comfortable and confident with my analysis of different poems. I analyzed them through the lens of love and heartbreak. The two poems I selected for my essay were, “Soneto” by Jose de Espronceda and “Rima LIII” by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. The further analysis I conducted served to emphasize the sense of love and heartbreak through the vivid images of nature by the Romantic poets with progressive attitudes. In the future, I will further explore poetry written in English by authors who talk about contemporary issues Latinx communities are facing. I am drawn to poetry because although it may be complicated and intricate, once you understand the meaning behind the imagery, it is beautiful. I have had the opportunity multiple times to practice my poetry writing skills, and it is something that I am surprisingly good at. Likewise, I believe that this course also related to Span 316 because in that class I learned about Spanish history. In that class, we read similar authors, but this class expanded into literature from Latin America.
