WLC 400 - WLC Major Capstone
Course Description: Students work with the instructor and WLC faculty advisors to research, synthesize, write and present their Capstone projects. Students will also complete a Graduation ePortfolio reflecting how each MLO was met. This course is required for all Japanese Language and Culture, and Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures majors.
Course Narrative: This course meets MLO 6 and was the final class of the major for me. I was able to work on my capstone project with my capstone partner and create a paper and finalize my ePortfolio which I am proud of. I was able to learn how to conduct research searches in databases and learn proper citation measures for APA. I also conducted two interviews with two participants for my capstone project, and we recorded them on Zoom. To conduct these interviews, we created an informed consent form, came up with interview questions, conducted the interviews, and then transcribed them. Through this process of creating and finishing our capstone paper, I learned how about academic writing and what it is supposed to look like. This was definitely a challenge, but with the support and help of my partner, we were able to complete it. I also completed my ePortfolio in this course, where I created a product that I am proud to share and represent my learning throughout the major. In the future, I wish to further develop my writing skills to be able to one day publish an academic paper in an academic research journal. I enjoyed learning about the creation of a website, and I will have this website until the end of time. This course relates to most of the classes that I have taken in the major because I have conducted research in the databases and written up my work. I had never written a paper this large, but I am glad that I was able to write this paper entirely in Spanish. I intend to use my academic writing skills in my next step, which is graduate school. I am headed to San Jose State University to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching, and I believe that the skills I learned writing my capstone will apply to when I have to write my Master’s thesis at SJSU.
