SPAN 316 - Cultures and Civilizations of Spain
Course Description: Study of the development of Spanish culture & civilization through geography, religion, sociology, and the arts of the Iberian Peninsula with special reference to the ways of thinking and cultural products. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative: This course fulfills MLO 1 as it allowed me to practice my Spanish-speaking skills through writing in Spanish my art analysis, and it allowed me to learn more about the rich Spanish culture. As part of the class I learned about Spanish art that was painted by artist Diego Velazquez who was a Spanish artist in the 17th century as well as Francisco de Goya who was a Spanish artist in the 19th century. These meaningful works of art touch on themes related to the Spanish monarchy. For my final project I decided to focus on the struggles women went through during the 20th and 21st centuries in the regions of Catalonia and Galicia Spain. Author Emilia Pardo Bazan uses the narrative of "El Revólver" to explore the oppressive environment in which women out of necessity live with men while being subject to masculine desires. This course taught me how to effectively present my research findings and analysis in Spanish as well as the rich history that exists in Spain. I wish to visit Spain one day and hike El Camino de Santiago which is the longest pilgrimage route in Europe. This course relates to Span 306 because the Spanish empire was the one that settled in the Americas.
