SPAN 313 - Intro to Spanish Linguistics
Course Description: Intro to Spanish Linguistics: Presents the principal branches of linguistic study, as it pertains to Spanish: the sound system (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), and the structure of sentences (syntax). Additionally, attention is paid to bilingualism, especially Spanish in the US, and how Spanish is spoken/written differently by various social groups (sociolinguistics) and in various Spanish-speaking countries (dialectology). Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative: This course meets Major Learning Outcome 2. In this class, I was able to strengthen my knowledge of different linguistics terms. I did work in groups as well as did a midterm exam and a final exam. This course allowed me to learn more about linguistics and expanded my knowledge of technical branches of linguistics like phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax. This class also prepared me for the future as a bilingual teacher, I will be able to teach Spanish linguistics to my students. Specifically, how to sound out their words or how words are formed. This class was very fun thanks to my professor Dr. Pozzi who always has a positive attitude. I worked on a mini project where, with a partner, we both practiced different phonetic activities. I also learned the phonetic alphabet and was able to recognize different symbols as well as the sounds that most symbols made. This course was a difficult course for me, but Dr. Pozzi made sure we practiced for our tests in class and made study guides. I learned a lot about myself, especially how I study best. I wish to further develop my ability to phonetically divide words into syllables. As a future bilingual teacher, I see myself teaching my students how to read, write, and speak Spanish. This class gave me a taste of what it will be like to see linguistics incorporated into my classroom. This course relates to the two other linguistics classes that I took because, in Span 323 and Ling 392, we explored topics such as bilingualism. It was interesting to learn about bilingualism, and I personally connected to it when we talked about Spanglish. I intend to further explore topics of linguistics, bilingualism, and Spanglish in my graduate studies as a bilingual teacher. I am excited that this class offered a stepping stone in the right direction.
