SPAN 301 - Composition and Oral Practice
Course Description: Continues to build proficiency as defined by the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Content-based instruction develops communicative language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through readings and discussions of authentic Hispanic cultural and literary texts. For students with two or more years of Spanish or an intermediate level of Spanish language proficiency.
Course Narrative: In Span 301 I learned how to effectively communicate in Spanish through reading, writing, and speaking. In this class, we worked on developing our writing skills by learning how to conjugate in proper terms, as well as share our homework assignments aloud during class. I also took an oral exam where I recorded myself sharing my future goals and the professor graded by speaking abilities. I had a lot of fun articulating the final oral exam as well as recording my response. Lastly, the final group project was one of the most memorable pieces from the class. I learned about the Muxes of Oaxaca, which means the third gender. The term Muxe comes from the antique Zapotec dialect and is used to describe a community of gay men who date straight men while dressing as women and sometimes assuming traditional female roles within the family and society. I felt inspired to visit Oaxaca after doing my research for the presentation and watching the Netflix episode about Lady Tacos de Canasta in the Taco Chronicles Netflix series. I was also shocked at how ahead of their time the ancestral indigenous tribes were. Furthermore, I would like to further develop my writing and grammatical skills. This course relates to Span 306 because I learned about Latin America from its pre-Columbian origins such as the indigenous groups of Mexico.
