SPAN 306 - Culture and Civilization of Spanish Latin America
Course Description: This course presents a historical and cultural overview of Hispanic Latin America from its pre-Columbian origins to the present through works of literature, art, music, and video clips. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative: This course fulfills MLO 3 because I learned about the geography and culture of Latin America. In this course I became familiar with the map of Latin America and I learned about the different names given to Latin America and how they can be problematic. The first term is Indoamerica which comes from the word “Indias” which was defined by Christopher Columbus when he “discovered” American. The next term is Iberoamerica which excludes Hiati and Suriname. Then the term South America excludes other countries that are not in the southern hemisphere such as Central America o the Caribbean. The next term is Latinoamerica which was invented by the French in the 19th century and exclude other countries that are not Latino. Lastly the term Hispanoamerica does not take into account other races such as indigenous, African or indigenous to Latin America. Through learning about these terms, the history of Latin America and how the countries that form part of Latin America came to be I became more aware of the countries outside my parent's country of origin, Mexico. This course was collaboration heavy and for the final project we used Google Earth and labeled important geographical locations in Latin America. I also did a group presentation on a specific country and my group and I worked on Venezuela. Venezuela is a country that counts on the primary resources of petroleum, iron, gold, diamonds, copper, and coal. I wish to further learn about the beautiful locations that exist in Latin America like Macchu Piccu and the Galápagos Islands. This course relates to Span 316 because the history of the Spanish colonization of the Americas is intertwined between both courses.
